AUSTIN — Senior Jack Helgeson scored five goals and added two assists, Sean Lipinski notched two goals and three assists and the Faribault High School boys hockey team came back to beat Austin 8-3 on Thursday.

The Falcons trailed 3-1 midway through the second period when Helgeson caught fire. He scored twice to end the second with FHS tied 3-3, then scored three consecutive goals to end the game in a five-goal rout.

“It’s his senior year, too. This will be his last time coming down here,” coach Brad Ryan said. “It was a great chance for him and some of these guys to step up and take charge.”

Faribault (4-8-0, 2-1-0 Big 9 Conference) outshot the Packers 38-29 in the game and controlled all phases of special teams. FHS went 1-for-3 on the power play, held Austin scoreless on the man-advantage and notched a shorthanded goal in the third.

With Austin (2-9-0, 1-4-0) leading 3-1 in the second, Ryan said the Falcons didn’t panic.

“The way we battled back and tied it up to make it 3-3 is something I’m proud of,” Ryan said.

Goalie Cody Morsching stopped 26 Austin shots to pick up the win.
