Senior hoping to end his career with a trip to the Xcel

Burnsville has only been to the state tournament once (2007) since 1991. Senior forward Mike Dockry would like nothing better than to end his career with a trip to the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul come March.

Dockry is the leading scorer for the Blaze (7-2-2) through its first 11 games. He has 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points.

The playmaking captain had a hat trick and three assists in a 12-0 victory over Prior Lake. Earlier this season, Dockry scored four goals in an 8-4 triumph over Eastview.

Here is a closer look at Dockry:

Best movie I've seen in the past year: "The Fighter."

Three words or phrases my friends or teammates might use to describe me: Quiet; dedicated; honest.

How do you balance school and sports during the year? I try to get most of my school work done during study hall, so I don't have to worry about it at home.

Favorite pregame meal: Jimmy John's and a banana.

Who is your school's biggest rival, and why? Probably Bloomington Jefferson because the rink is always packed when we play and we usually end up playing them in sections.

How did you get started in hockey? My dad played, so there were always sticks and balls in our house. I started at a young age. I think I was 2 or 3 years old and I would wear my double-runner skates down in our basement on the carpet shooting balls around.

At my first varsity practice, I felt... very nervous and excited. I remember in the first drill I got drilled in the head by a slapshot. Great start!

To get focused for competition, I... sleep and visualize.

What is your goal this season? To make it to the state tournament and end my high school hockey career with a win.

What did you work on in the offseason? Getting stronger and my shot.

What is your most memorable goal? My first varsity goal against Lakeville North. I beat a guy from behind the net and took a backhand shot short side that just got over his shoulder.

What has been your most embarrassing moment on the ice? When I was a squirt, I played for my dad in a father-son pickup game for my brother's end-of-the-year mite Level 3 party. My brother and I got into a fight and were kicked off the ice. My mom had to come pick us up and she wasn't very happy about it.

If you could change one thing about high school sports, what would it be? Free admission to all events for students.

When you have time off during vacation, what do you like to do? Hang out with friends, play roller hockey, and golf.

Who is your favorite college or pro sports team and why? Dallas Stars because I lived in Texas for a couple years and my favorite all-time player is Mike Modano.

In 10 years, I hope I'm ... healthy and living the dream!

What is the best sports advice you ever received? You have to practice like champions to play like champions.
