Skippers thump Edina 4-1 and stuff any Hornet comeback, replay the webcast here.

The Minnetonka Skippers knew the Edina Hornets would come out of the gate with a flurry of energy coming off a tough 5-4 overtime loss to the Wayzata Trojans.  The Hornets flew out of the gates yet the Skippers held off the fast start.  Erik Baskin scored a pair of goals as his first tally marked the game's first goal at 12:16 of the first period.  He scored again on a beautiful backhand effort high over Edina goalie Connor Girard for the 2-0 lead and the eventual game winning goal at 6:34 of the second period.

The Skippers never looked back as they went on to collect the 4-1 victory and claimed sole possession of first place in the competitive Lake Conference.  The defensive play was spot on for the Skippers in all three zones and they played with a lead as well as any team in high school hockey.  Minnetonka did not panic when Michael Sit scored off a draw as he muscled his way to the net and beat Skipper goalie Alex Glockner who made 21 saves in the win.

"The first five minutes coming in her for a lot of the new guys it's a new experience for them and they were a little timid," Skipper head coach Brian Urick Said.  "We were fortunate to get that nice goal by Baskin and it kind eased the nerves and the guys began to play a little bit better."

Urick also said his defensemen played better and said, "I thought the defense were great tonight an they limited their chances."

Edna coach Curt Giles took the loss in stride as he discussed the contest with the Skippers.  "We did some good things," Giles said.  "We didn't do enough good things but they are a good team and it was good challenge.   These are good tests for us.  We have got about 10 or 11 games left in the season.  You want to be playing your best hockey the last part of the season and these are the times, that mid year type of thing when things don't go your way you have got to fight through those things to continually get better down the stretch an that is what we hope to do."

Braemar Arena has not been friendly of late to the Skippers as the Hornets have mounted some memorable comebacks.  Last year was a tough pill for the Skippers to swallow as they watched a 4-0 first period lead evaporate and turn into an Edina 5-4 overtime victory.   That comeback may have propelled the Hornets to the State Title.   Even though coaches and players say it is just "another game,"' that one stuck in the back of the Skippers minds.

"This place has been a house of horrors for us with leads the last two years," Urick said.  "And, our guys have had a hard time holding a lead in the third.  We went in there and said, 'It's zero-zero guys. Don't even think about the score, don't think about anything, go out there, win the third period, win the game and we will go from there.' "

The Skippers are ready to run and hold sole possession of first place in the Lake Conference with a 2-0 record.
