Brainerd senior, one of state's scoring leaders, commits to Nebraska-Omaha

Josh Archibald

Brainerd forward Josh Archibald, a senior who has ranked among the state’s scoring leaders all season, has committed to play at the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

The 5-foot-10, 170-pound Archibald made the verbal commitment to accept a scholarship offer from the Mavericks on Wednesday, Jan. 26.

Archibald ranked seventh in the state with 55 points (21 goals, 34 assists) through Monday, Jan. 31. He turned down scholarship offers from Bowling Green, the University of Minnesota-Duluth and Northern Michigan.

Archibald also made unofficial visits to Bemidji State and the University of North Dakota. Jim Archibald, Josh’s father and Brainerd’s head boys hockey coach, played four seasons at North Dakota.

“I did not get involved at all other than sitting down with Josh, and we talked about the pros and cons of each place that showed interest him,” said Jim Archibald, who played for the Fighting Sioux when Nebraska-Omaha head coach Dean Blais was an assistant coach in the UND program. “We wanted him to make the final decision because we want him going somewhere where he feels comfortable.”

Josh Archibald scored 15 points (eight goals, seven assists) in 21 games for Team North during the Upper Midwest High School Elite Hockey League’s regular season and was selected to play for the Elite League’s Minnesota Red team in the Bauer National Invitational Tournament.

Archibald is expected to play for the Mavericks beginning next season.
