A win, loss and a tie was the result at the end of a busy week for the Mound Westonka boys high school hockey team the week of Feb. 7 against Delano, Providence Academy and Hutchinson.

The Feb. 8  game at Delano was a classic high school hockey tilt with both teams playing cautious hockey in the early going much like two boxers in the first few rounds of a boxing match. There was no scoring in the 1st period with each team taking one penalty in the opening frame. The White Hawks opened the scoring at 12.02 of the 2nd when defenseman Charlie Curti(Alex Bakke) hit the upper right corner of the net on a screen shot from the left point when  MW sustained pressure in the Tiger zone after a 2 on 1 break and aggressive forecheck.   MW goaltender David Engel played well keeping Delano off the scoreboard with smart positioning in net.   At the end of the 2nd MW lead 1-0

The Tigers tied the score at 6.32 of the 3rd when the high powered Prinsen, McLain, Heinonen  line connected on a back door rebound from Prinsen.  In the first meeting of the season MW could not shut down the trio giving up 4 goals in a January WCC contest.  The goal swung momentum the Tigers way but tonight the White Hawks would not be denied.  At 9.14 MW junior Bakke skated into the Delano zone to the end boards and fed David Bingham in front of the net to take the lead.  Just 40 sec. later Kirby Horgan (J. Brandstetter, Pearson) would put the game out of reach on a high shot in close on a rebound in front of the Tiger net.  MW held off a fierce charge by the Tigers in the last 7 minutes of the game for the 3-1 victory over the highly touted Delano team.

Thurs. Feb. 10 MW hosted Providence Academy in an important game with possible post-season seeding implications. MW suffered a letdown after the Delano win and came out flat giving up the opening goal just 35 sec. into the contest to former White Hawk Mitchell Roux. The lions scored two more times in the 1st going up 3-0.  With just 2 sec. left in the period the White Hawk freshman Hunter  Smith (Griffith,Palm) put the home team on the board.

MW came out strong in the 2nd almost connecting on a 2 on 0 breakaway  56 sec. onto the middle frame.  There was no scoring in the period and few penalties.  The home team tried to claw back into the game and did score at 2.33 of the 3rd on a Riley Williams (Bakke,Curti)  goal in tight on the  Lion net minder. Williams leads MW with 13 goals to date.  In the end, the White Hawks could not find a third goal and fell to the visitors 2-3.

The team traveled to Hutchinson for the final game of the week on Friday the 11th to face another WCC opponent.  MW started out strong taking the lead when senior Jack Brady (Pearson) swatted  in a rebound out of mid air.  30 sec. later, Hunter Smith took advantage of a Jack Brandstetter rebound after Brandstetter skated into the offensive zone and shot the puck towards the Hutch goalie from the goal line  20 feet off to the side of the net. The Tigers scored at 10.08 after a defensive zone turn over allowed the Hutch skater to go in all alone on MW Goaltender Andy Seats.  At 16.57 with 3 seconds left in the period, White Hawk senior Kirby Horgan stole the puck in the corner of the Tiger zone and found Jack Brady for Brady’s 2nd goal  of the period.  MW held a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.

The 2nd period opened with a Tiger goal at 2.53 to cut the lead to one.  One minute later, MW sophomore Tanner Palm notched his first varsity goal on a rebound  from  the right side of the net from a left point shot(J. Brandstetter, Curti) and collected the puck from the linesman for safe keeping.  Hutch would score three more times in the period taking a 5-4 lead into the locker room.

The White Hawks put consistent pressure on the Tiger defenders in the 3rd, and the effort paid off at 12.28 with a Riley Williams (Bakke) goal that looked similar to Smiths 1st period score.  At the end of regulation the teams were locked  up at 5-5.  Overtime did not yield many shots for Hutch (3) as MW looked to finish off the week with an OT victory. The White Hawks could not get 8 shots past the Tiger goalie and settled for a 5-5 tie.

The White Hawks open sectional (playoff) action the week of Feb. 21 with dates and times to be determined.
