The White Hawk boys high school hockey team closed out conference play with a home game against Waconia and at Orono finishing the season 10-11-4 before heading to section play.

Tues. Feb. 15 was senior night at Thaler arena with Waconia closing out the home schedule. The Wildcats scored the game’s  opening goal at 4.21 of the 1st  when  an MW  defensive lapse let Waconia skate the puck the length of the ice around the defense in tight on the net to stuff one home for a 1-0 lead.  Most of the period was played at a slow pace with not much action until senior Charlie Hales tied the score on a screen shot to the upper left corner of the goal from the high slot area (Horgan).

The White Hawks took control of the game in the 2nd, dominating play with most of the period played in the Wildcat zone. Hunter Smith (Palm) gave the home team the lead for good on a face off from the left side when he went to the net jamming in a rebound at 10.00. At 15.13, Hales scored his second of the game when Riley Williams took the puck into the offensive zone around the Waconia net finding Hales on the weak side and extending the lead to 3-1.  MW outshot Waconia 15-4 in the period.

MW senior Joe Graphenteen tallied a goal at 4.38 of the 3rd on a feed from Jack Brandstetter.  Kirby Horgan notched his first of two in the 3rd when fellow senior Jack Brady skated in from the corner finding Horgan in front of the Waconia net.  Horgan would score again with 3 minutes remaining (Spanjers,Curti) for 6-1 White Hawk victory.

Sat. Feb. 19 the boys visited the always tough Orono Spartans for the final Wright County Conference game of the season. MW came out flying with several early 1st period chances, including a glancing shot off the cross bar but could not find the back of the net.  At 6.51 of the 1st the Spartans took the lead on a one timer off a nice pass from the corner of the MW zone.  Just 15 seconds later, Orono would score again on about the same play. The Spartans extended the lead to 3 at 8.17 on a slap shot from the high slot area. MW took three penalties in the second half of the frame and couldn’t gain any momentum.

The 2nd period was scoreless with the Spartans taking three penalties and the lead remained at three heading into the 3rd.  Orono scored two more times in the 3rd shutting out the White Hawks 5-0.

Seeding for section has been completed, with Mound getting the #7 seed.  They will face-off against Waconia (#10) again in the first round of Section 2A play-offs.
