Eagan takes out No. 2 Edina for third place in Class 2A

Determined not to let a flat showing against top-seeded Eden Prairie in the semifinals be its lasting impression of the state tournament, Eagan defeated No. 2 Edina

5-4 on Saturday in the Class 2A third-place game at Xcel Energy Center.

Ryan Nelson scored 1 minute, 50 seconds into the game to get Eagan on the board.

That lead would eventually stretch to 3-0 after goals by Eli May and Nick Kuchera, who had two goals for the Wildcats.

“It wasn’t very hard for us to get up for this game,” Kuchera said. “We already lost to them in a pretty tough way earlier this season. So our whole team just had the passion to come out and get revenge against these guys.”

Ten Eagan skaters recorded at least one point, helping the Wildcats win their first boys’ hockey state trophy.

Lakeville North rallies vs. White Bear Lake

Playing in its fifth consecutive overtime game, White Bear Lake ran out of gas against Lakeville North in the Class 2A consolation championship at Mariucci Arena. The Bears squandered a 3-1 third-period lead by giving up goals to the Panthers’ Charlie Hayes and Gordon Kappers in the final

1:23 of regulation.

Evan Peterson then scored 15 seconds into the third overtime to give Lakeville North the victory.

The teams combined for 80 shots and 84 minutes of penalties, including four 10-minute infractions: two misconducts and one abuse of officials for White Bear Lake and one misconduct for the Panthers.

Breck bounces back

Defending Class 1A champion Breck eased the frustration from its quarterfinal loss by breezing through the consolation bracket at Mariucci. After routing New Ulm 6-0 on Friday the Mustangs blitzed Rochester Lourdes 7-4 in the consolation championship Saturday.

Breck scored three goals in both the second and third periods. Sophomore Thomas Lindstrom scored the game-winner early in the third period.
