Buffalo High School and the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) have named Calvin James this year's male recipient for the ExCEL (Excellence in Community, Education and Leadership) Award.
Sponsored by the MSHSL, ExCEL is a unique recognition program designed exclusively for Minnesota high school juniors. Students who are active in either fine arts and/or athletic activities, who show leadership qualities, and who are model citizens in their community are eligible for the award.
State level ExCEL Award recipients are selected through a multi-level process that involves League member schools and an independent panel of judges from schools throughout Minnesota. Cal will now be considered as choices for state award recipients recognized on KSTC-TV (Channel 45) during the winter tournaments. In May, the BHS junior will also be recognized at Buffalo High School's Academic Excellence Program.
Calvin has been an A-Honor Roll student since entering ninth grade at BHS. Along with outstanding academic records, he has long and impressive activity resumes that include participation in athletics, music, leadership and community service activities. Calvin has decided to make leadership and service a priority in their lives. Calvin was recently asked to share thoughts on leadership in an essay as a part of this process. At a recent volunteer event, Calvin stated that he "learned that to truly be thankful you take into consideration of all the people that are less fortunate."
On behalf of BHS and the MSHSL, we would like to congratulate Cal. "The ExCEL Award program is an excellent opportunity for high school juniors who have excelled to receive statewide recognition for their leadership, school involvement, and community service," said BHS Activities Director Tom Bauman. "These two students (along with female winner Emilee Feldman) are just outstanding young people, and it is our privilege at Buffalo High School to have this type of leadership and inspiration in our school each day."
Cal is the son of Seth and Jill James of Buffalo. For more information about the ExCEL Award program, please contact the League at 763-560-2262 or on the web.
