A quick look back at Class 2A quarterfinal action.

Three Stars

1. Garrett Worth, Duluth East, senior

The state’s top goal scorer thrives under the bright lights, notching three goals in a performance that puts him alongside some of Duluth East’s all-time greats.

2. Sammy Walker, Edina, senior

Speed is a big part of Walker’s game, but with four assists, he showed he can be more than just a straight-line blur by orchestrating a handful of highlight-worthy goals.

3. Hayden Brickner, Centennial, senior

The forward not only set up the game winner against St. Thomas Academy with a hard hit forcing a turnover, but he scored it on a rebound from close range.

By the numbers

4 -- Mr. Hockey finalists (Sammy Walker and Demetrious Koumontzis of Edina; Luke LaMaster and Garrett Worth of Duluth East) who will square off in the first of Friday’s two Class 2A semifinals. These teams’ last semifinal meeting came in 2015, a 3-1 Greyhounds upset.

3 -- Goals scored (two for Minnetonka, one for Hill-Murray) in their game before a goaltender from either team made a save. Both Skippers goals, from Joe Molenaar and James Miller, were shots from the point.

8 -- Combined losses of top four seeds Minnetonka, Edina, Duluth East and St. Thomas Academy entering the tournament. It’s the fewest in a decade, a big reason the field is considered one of the best in recent memory.

37,630 -- Thursday afternoon’s announced crowd for the Class 2A quarterfinal session was 19,040 and the evening session was 18,590.

Quote

“It’s East and Edina, the cake from the north against the cake from the south. It doesn’t get any better than that.”
