CCM HP Boys 16s: Day 3 Recap

Section 3 A/AA, Kelly Green- 3 vs. Section 8 A/AA, White -1

The 7th place game between Section 3 A/AA and 8 A/AA kicked off day 3 of the HP Spring Festival. Brainerd's Anthony Menghini tallied the first goal of the game, 4 minutes into the half to give White the early up. White would hold the lead for the majority of the 1st half until Jonston Meiers (Eagan) would find the back of the net to tie the game with just 43 seconds remaining. Meiers would, again, come out strong in the second half and wrist in his second goal of the game at 22:52.  Green would go on to clinch the 7th place game with a final goal from Sibley Bantam, Jared Wright.

Section 2A/AA, Orange- 4 vs. Section 1 A/AA, Red- 3

WHAT A GAME! Section 2 A/AA took on Section 1 A/AA for the consolation title and the game did not disappoint! Breck's Beau Courneya got the ball rolling with a goal early in the first half.  Fellow teammates in Orange, Matt Beaty  (Prior Lake) and Jet Lee Swift (Minnetonka) took the lead to 3 following back to back goals within two minutes.  With just over 3 minutes to play in the half, Mankato East's Jacob Kanzenbach tallied the first goal for Section 1, leaving the gap at 2.  Red came out hot in the second, scoring two goals in the first 3 minutes; Brandon Swenson (Mankato West) and Mitchell Kohner (Lakeville North).  Just when you thought the game was heading into OT, Chaska's Owen Thomas scored with 4.9 seconds remaining, sealing the consolation title for Section 2 A/AA.

Section 4A/AA, Royal Blue- 4 vs. Section 6 A/AA, Gray- 2

Today's 3rd place matchup took place between Section 4 A/AA and Section 6 A/AA.  Royal Blue's Samuel Newpower (WBL) came out on fire, tallying the first goal of the game in the first 3 minutes.  Gray's Cullen Hiltner (Cathedral) would tie the game at 11:15 only to have Blue answer back a minute later with a goal from Lleyton Roed (WBL). Cam Kluender (South St. Paul) would extend Section 4's lead by 2 with a goal at 18:33 in the second. Jonah Mortenson (BSM) closed the gap with a goal for Gray halfway through the second but it was ultimately Stillwater's Mike Sweetland that would seal the win for Section 4 with a last minute, empty net goal.

Section 5A/AA, Sky Blue- 2 vs. Section 7 A/AA, Gold- 4

HP Spring Festival closed out with a faceoff between Section 5 A/AA and Section 7 A/AA for the championship title. Harrison Vandermey (Andover) gave Gold the early lead with a goal 30 seconds into the half.  Five minutes later, a power play would allow Maple Grove's Benjamin Leafblad to tie the game at 1. With just 21 seconds remaining in the half, Monticello's Brian Cornelius would put Sky Blue on top by 1 going into the second. 

While both teams came into the second half neck and neck, matching every skate, it was Gold that would go on to dominate the last quarter of the game.  Section 7 A/AA scored three goals in the final 8 minutes of play; Gunnar Thoreson (Andover), wristing in the tying goal at 8:02. Teammates Mason Langenbrunner (Cloquet) and Vandermey (his second goal of the game) would secure the Championship title by 2 points, defeating Section 5 A/AA by a score of 4-2.
