First report

It goes in the books as a tie, but it sure seemed like a lot more for Maple Grove.

Kyle and Trevor Kukkonen scored and Jack Wieneke saved both shots he faced in a shootout as Maple Grove topped Edina in the Turkey Trot championship Saturday at the Plymouth Ice Center. The game officially finished as a 3-3 tie that went through a scoreless overtime, with the Crimson winning the shootout 2-0 to earn the tournament title.

Maple Grove led 1-0 on a first-period power-play goal by Trevor Kukkonen (2-2-4) at the 11:22 mark. Edina’s Kevin Delaney (4-0-4) tied it at 15:24.

The Crimson allowed just one goal in a stretch of more than three shorthanded minutes in the second, including a pair of 5-on-3 opportunities for Edina, ranked No. 2 in the Class 2A state coaches' preseason poll. Mike Vorlicky (1-1-2) scored on the two-man advantage to put the Hornets up 2-1.

Two rushes in the second period's final two minutes had Maple Grove (1-0-1) up 3-2 heading to the third. Kyle Kukkonen (2-1-3) and Justin Janicke (2-1-3) each had goals as the Crimson reclaimed the lead after spending most of the game in their own zone.

Edina (1-0-1) forward Delaney scored his second goal of the game at 8:23 of the third, tying the score at 3.

Trevor Kukkonen scored to open the shootout, Edina’s Liam Malmquist missed, Kyle Kukkonen scored on a backhand move and Wieneke saved Mason Nevers’ attempt to seal the result.

Wieneke made 37 saves, while Edina’s Lauden Hogg made 15 stops.
