Cadets coaches shuffled the team's top two lines for the start of the second period, a move that resulted in three quick goals and a cushion big enough to withstand a Ponies' charge.

Looking to light a fire under his team after an unimaginative opening period against Stillwater Thursday afternoon at the Hockey For Life Classic in Prior Lake, St. Thomas Academy co-head coach Greg Vannelli felt it was time to tinker.

Blessed with the front-end talent to fill out two “top” lines, Vannelli and the other Cadets coaches decided to shuffle the team's best six forwards into new combinations.

First Report

Luke Herzog scored twice, and Rob Christy added two points to help lead St. Thomas Academy to a 4-3 victory over Stillwater Thursday at the Hockey For Life Classic in Prior Lake.

St. Thomas Academy took the lead 1 minute, 13 seconds into the second period on a goal by Herzog, and the Cadets, ranked No. 11 in this week’s Class 2A coaches’ poll, never trailed.

Stillwater converted on three of four power-play chances, but the No. 15-2A Ponies (6-2-1, 0-1-0) could not catch the Cadets (6-1-0, 5-0-0).

Senior forward Adam Eisele had two goals and finished with three points to lead the Ponies, and defensemen Joe Stengl and Joe Raleigh each chipped in two assists.

Stillwater goalie Jesse Brown finished with 23 saves, while St. Thomas Academy's Muzzy Donohue stopped 31 shots.
