Holy Family Catholic has struggled to win close games this season, but is outscoring opponents by nearly 2.5 goals a game. The Fire's impressive goal differential will be tested by a stingy Blaine defense on Saturday. Photo by Cheryl Myers, SportsEngine
We task our reporters with identifying several intriguing games throughout the state to assemble our Top Games of the Week. The matchups are presented in no particular order, and when there are additional games we want to highlight, we’ll include them with brief notes.
White Bear Lake vs. Minnetonka, Thursday, Jan. 10, 7 p.m. White Bear Lake won two big games recently, beating Hill-Murray 3-2 on Dec. 22 and topping Stillwater 2-1 on Jan. 3. The Bears (10-1-1, 7-0-1) travel to Minnetonka, where they'll face the No. 1-2A Skippers (14-0-0), who have not been tested often this season.
East Grand Forks vs. Moorhead, Tuesday, Jan. 8, 7 p.m. East Grand Forks (10-1, 3-0) had a solid start against Mariucci Conference foes, while Moorhead has played just two league games thus far. The Spuds (8-6, 1-1) had a couple close results lately — a one-goal loss to No. 3-2A Edina on Dec. 27 and a 3-2 win over Stillwater in the Hockey for Life Classic on Dec. 29.
St. Cloud Cathedral vs. Sartell-St. Stephen, Thursday, Jan. 10, 7:15 p.m. St. Cloud Cathedral (12-1) took its first loss of the season — and just its third one-goal result — in a 2-1 defeat to Hermantown on Jan. 4. Sartell-St. Stephen (9-2, 4-0), which should be one of the top competitors in Class 1A, Section 6, presents a chance to get back on track.
