It’s shaping up to be a watershed season at Totino-Grace.

An electric vibe radiates within the school, and within the program. And outside, people might have no choice but to at starting to look at Totino-Grace and hockey with new eyes.

After struggling to earn nine wins last year, these Eagles (17-7, 11-1), who returned all but one of their top-15 scorers from last year’s team, have eight more total wins, captured the Northwest Suburban West Conference title, and closed down the regular season on Saturday at Breck with a 5-1 victory.

It was a solid finish to an eventful week that began with the program announcing it has elected to make the jump from Class 1A, and compete in the larger-school Class 2A starting next season.

“We had a lot of things go right today,” said Eagles coach Adam Sharratt. “We stayed out of the box and we played well 5-on-5, and John Howe was really on his game tonight.”

First Report

Totino-Grace started fast and finished strong, working its way past Breck 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at the Breck School Anderson Ice Arena in Golden Valley.

The Eagles, ranked No. 2 in the Class 1A coaches’ poll, used an aggressive forecheck and smooth transition to overwhelm the Mustangs, despite being outshot 31-23 for the game.

Totino-Grace (17-7, 11-1) opened the scoring less than four minutes into the first period when junior forward Kyle Heffron buried a low-angle shot from a patch of ice between the bottom of the circle and the goal line.

After Breck’s Hudson Haecker answered 30 seconds later to tie it 1-1, the Mustangs reclaimed the lead with a pair of goals by senior forward Caleb Meehan before the first period ended. Meehan added an empty-net goal with eight seconds remaining to notch the hat trick.

Totino-Grace added another score early in the second period when Ben Palmer buried a wrist shot from the high slot, and the Mustangs (12-13, 5-3) never threatened the rest of the way.
