Friday was film study day for Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Red Knights coach Ken Pauly talked through selected highlights, many of them of them starring sophomore forward Jonah Mortenson.

“We showed a couple of clips of Morty against Holy Angels, when he had just some monster shifts,” Pauly said. “He would not be denied.”

First Report

Junior forward Cooper Gay scored with 2:51 left in the third period to boost No. 2 seed Benilde-St. Margaret’s past No. 3 seed Wayzata 3-2 on Saturday in a Class 2A, Section 6 semifinal at Bloomington Ice Garden.

Jonah Mortensen set up the winning goal for the Red Knights, ranked No. 10 in the Class 2A state coaches' poll, by rocketing down the left side of the rink, wheeling past a defenseman and then pulling Wayzata goalie Danny Fraga out of position before feeding Gay for the easy goal.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s (20-7-0) leading scorer Blake Mesenburg scored the lone goal of the second period to tie the score at 2. Mesenburg’s goal, his 23rd of the season, came on a power play 2:41 into the period.

Wayzata (13-10-4) scored twice in a span of 41 seconds in the first period to take a 2-1 lead. The power-play goals by the Trojans’ Michael North and Jack Kimlinger came with Benilde-St. Margaret’s forward Adam Marshall serving a five-minute major penalty for kneeing.

Wayzata appeared to have opened the scoring in the first when Maxwell Breon banged in a pass at the left goal post while racing in on a 2-on-1. Although one referee initially signaled a good goal, after conferring with the goal judge the goal was waived off, presumably because Breon directed the puck in with his skate as he was falling to the ice. The net also was dislodged on the play 6:12 into the first, but after the puck crossed the goal line.

Benilde-St. Margaret’s Jackson Bisson opened the scoring just 50 seconds after the Wayzata no-goal.

Red Knights goaltender Carson Limesand finished with 28 saves. Wayzata’s Fraga made 18 stops.
