Hawks Take One on the Chin

By Willie Monteiro 02/22/2012, 12:57pm CST

Tom Monteiro takes 10 stitches & scores 2 in opening round loss

Getting two goals called back in the first period may have taken some wind out of Cooper's sails. The Hawks got off to a great start, dominating play in the first period while having two goals called off. Tom Monteiro scored close in on an amazing back hand shot that he lifted over the goalie's shoulder, across the top bar & into the net.  Unfortunately there was a high sticking penalty behind the play that negated that goal.  He did, however, get one that counted as well. Jay Tonsager put one home beating the goalie to the left side, but apparently the right post was off its mooring causing the goal to be waived off. Instead of going into the locker room with a lead, they enjoyed the first intermission down by one.

Tom Monteiro got knocked out of the game in the second period due to an errant hit to the head from his own teammate that split Tom's chin open.  He returned in the third period and slammed home a rebound off of a shot by Hayden Gautsche to score the second and final goal the Hawks would get.

Outside of that it was pretty much the Newton Fuller show. Fuller tallied four goals while Joe Guimont racked up 5 assists for the Novas who eventually went on to win the game by a score of 9-2 scoring 6 of the 9 in the third. Newhon Norkeh of the Hawks & Ian Whitehead of the Novas decided to throw some punches in the third getting thrown out of the game for fighting - it's not the NHL fellas.

Cooper players were saddened that the end of the season came what seemed like too soon.  The Novas have to travel to Pagel Arena on Thursday to try to slay the giant (Minnetonka). The bright side is that if they can win, they'll displace the #1 seed in the section & #2 ranked team in the state. A tall order, but then again David was able to beat Goliath - good luck Novas.

Hawks End Regular Season With a Win on Senior Night

By Willie Monteiro 02/18/2012, 12:12pm CST

The Cooper Hawks have a lot to be proud of at the end of their season. They finished it up in classic fashion with Seniors scoring the goals on Senior Night. Jay Tonsager, Joe Lavalier, Tom Monteiro & Dustin Schultz crafted the four goals that gave them their 4-1 victory over the Vikings. Schultz got the #1 Star of the game with a three point performance.

The remaining seniors are Alex Johnson, Sam Morgen & John Lewis. All of them deserve congratulations for their hard work and perseverance.

The Hawks finished the season with 9 wins, 14 losses and a tie.  The highlight of the season was winning the holiday tournament in Silver Bay. The low point was a humiliating loss at the hands of the Red Knights. Through it all they were a cohesive team. Sure, there were squabbles and disappoinments along the way, but there were also the good times celebrating a few wins, reminiscing the overtime thrillers and the priceless locker room atmosphere that is privately theirs, but surely a source of great memories.

The road ahead is tough, with a play-in game next Tuesday up next, the Hawks will muster their "A" game to try to win and move on. There's a large brick wall after that if they move on.  Playing the #1 seed in section 6AA (Minnetonka) would not be the choice of any team in the state, much less Cooper. They'll take it one game at a time and do their best.

Good luck Hawks!
