Malmquist shines on big stage

Dylan Malmquist of Edina scored six goals and added five assists in five pool play games to finish as the leading scorer in the USA Hockey Select 17 National Development Camp held June 27-July 3 in Williamsville, N.Y.

Malmquist, who helped Edina win the state Class 2A championship last season as a sophomore, not only led all players with 11 points but he also shared the goal-scoring lead.

Jake Wahlin of White Bear Lake also finished among the camp’s scoring leaders. He scored five goals and added three assists in five games to share fourth place on the scoring list with eight points.

Former Crookston star Paul Bittner had four goals and two assists in six games and Austin Poganski, a St. Cloud Cathedral star, had a goal and four assists in six games.

Poganski, Nickolas Wolff of Eagan and Jack Dougherty of St. Thomas Academy all played for Royal, which won the camp championship with a 4-3 overtime triumph over Red.

Bittner and Tyler Nanne of Edina skated for the Red team.

Malmquist, Wahlin and former Breck standout Keegan Iverson all played for the Blue team in the camp-ending All-Star Game.

Nineteen player who were on Minnesota high school teams last season participated in the camp.
