The Rogers Royals boys won an outdoor game 3-1 over Achiever Academy on Thursday evening at the Handke Pit in Elk River.

On a cold evening, 12 degrees with a biting wind, the Royals took their turn participating in Elk River’s Hockey Day in Minnesota week-long series of games on the outdoor rink constructed for the event.

The opponent was suppose to be Fergus Falls but the Otters elected not to make the long trip in dangerous weather. Achiever Academy, a second-year hockey-based school in Vadnais Heights, took their place.

After a scoreless first period, the Royals (11-3) heated up, at least with regard to scoring, in the second period. Branden Cecil connected at 2:06 (Jason Roberge assisting), Trent Fredrickson at 7:28 (Dustin Schoepke, Nick Przybilla) and Cecil again at 15:19 (Roberge, Alexander Lorman).

Travis Marsh got Achiever (9-5-2) on the board in the third period.

There were only two penalties, both on Rogers. The Royals had a 30-23 edge in shots. Jackson Nelson made 22 saves for Rogers and Sage Broda 27 for Achiever.

The Royals will play at St. Michael-Albertville on Saturday, 7 p.m.
