The biggest winner from the holiday tournament season has to be Edina, which captured the Schwan Cup Gold Division championship last week and is certain to move up in the rankings in the Class 2A state coaches’ poll. The Hornets look to maintain their winning form on the road at White Bear Lake, another program that is enjoying a charged start.

Conference battles start to take shape in January. St. Thomas Academy heads to Aldrich Arena to face Hill-Murray in a battle for control of the Metro East Conference, while Blaine takes on Elk River and Maple Grove faces Centennial in key Northwest Suburban Conference matchups.

Section seeding heats up in the northland, as Hermantown hosts Greenway in a Class 1A, Section 7 battle. In Class 2A, Section 8, Brainerd and Roseau enter the new year with ambitions to push for the top seeds in the section.

In the extreme west metro, Holy Family Catholic hosts Grand Rapids in a Class 2A top-10 matchup, while Delano travels to Orono with conference and section seeding up for grabs.

In the Independent Metro Athletic Conference, Breck hosts St. Paul Academy in a Saturday afternoon special certain to draw a crowd to Breck School Anderson Ice Arena in Golden Valley for this clash of Class 1A titans and long-standing rivals.
