Top performer candidates

Owen Beyer, Owatonna. After just two wins in the first 16 games of the season, the Huskies have won seven of their last eight, outscoring opponents 39-12 in that stretch. Beyer recorded a season-high seven points — more than double his previous high of three points — in the Huskies' 9-0 rout of Winona on Feb. 15. Beyer opened the scoring midway through the first period with a power-play goal, adding two more goals in the second period before scoring the game’s final goal in the third. Ian Kangas, Rock Ridge. The senior goaltender closed out the regular season with wins in his last three games, including two home wins for the Wolverines last week. Kangas earned his fourth shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory against Hibbing/Chisholm on Feb. 15, making 34 saves. He then backed the Wolverines’ 3-2 victory against Greenway on Feb. 17, posting a .935 save percentage while stopping 29 of the 31 shots he faced.

Evan Lunde, Wadena-Deer Creek. The junior forward tied his season high of five points on Feb. 14, helping the Wolverines finish the regular season with a 7-6 overtime win. In the victory against Sauk Rapids-Rice, Lunde netted a pair of goals in the first period and added two assists, including one on a power play late in the third period. With the game going to overtime, Lunde tallied his third assist of the game on the overtime game-winning goal.

Easton Portner, Sauk Rapids-Rice. The senior forward led the Storm’s offense last week with nine points combined between two wins. He first helped the team snap an eight-game losing streak in a 6-2 victory against River Lakes. In the Feb. 17 win, Portner recorded his third hat trick of the season, scoring his final goal of the game shorthanded, and added one assist for four points. Two nights later, in the Storm’s fourth game of the week, Portner tallied two goals and an assist in the first period to help the Storm get out to a 4-1 lead.  He then added two insurance goals in the third period, both within the first minute of the final period, as the Storm defeated Pine City Area 6-3.
