BOYS' HOCKEY: Eisenmenger, Eagles fly past Trojans

By Worthington Daily Globe 01/04/2011, 8:02pm CST

WORTHINGTON — The Windom Area Eagles boys’ hockey team put on a scoring exhibition against the Worthington Trojans Monday night at the Worthington Arena.

Adam Eisenmenger netted six goals as the Eagles roughed up their Southwest Conference rival, 10-1.

“We played well,” Eagles’ head coach Steve Clark said following the game. “We moved the puck really well and played position well. The puck movement and positioning helped us run the cycle down low, which created a lot of scoring opportunities (Monday night).”

The cycle employed by Windom offensively was a big factor in the game as the Trojans, seemingly, had no answer for it.

“Windom has a lot of skill players that we don’t have an answer for right now,” Worthington head coach Pat Christopherson stated after the game. “The cycle that Windom ran, we were incapable of stopping (Monday night).

“They moved the puck really well in the cycle and our kids aren’t used to seeing that, making it difficult for us to stop it defensively.”

WA took little time to start the scoring in Monday night’s contest as Eisenmenger made it a 1-0 game 33 seconds into the opening period with an unassisted goal that beat Worthington starting goaltender Zac Von Holdt (five saves) for the opening tally.

Four minutes later, the Eagles made it 2-0 as Mitchell Baumhoefner scored the first of his two goals with Justin Cook making the assist.

The Trojans cut the Eagles’ lead to 2-1 at the 7:46 mark as Levi Leach made a nice pass across the ice to Ethan Stofferan.

Stofferan put the puck past Eagles’ goaltender Ben Stubbe but it was the only goal Stubbe allowed in the game as the visiting netminder finished with 23 saves.

Worthington’s lone goal was answered by three more to finish the first period for Windom.

A goal by Joseph Voth, which was assisted by Brett Larson, and Baumhoefner’s second goal, which was assisted by Eric Haberman(two assists), came 11 seconds apart with just under five minutes to play in the first period putting Windom in charge, 4-1.

Eisenmenger netted his second goal with 20 seconds left in the first period as the Eagles took a 5-1 lead into the intermission.

A late first-period penalty on Worthington allowed Windom to start the second period on the power play and a second Trojans’ penalty 13 seconds into the second frame gave the Eagles a two-man advantage.

It didn’t take long for Windom to capitalize on the advantage as Eisenmenger beat Worthington’s Rylan Scholtes (who came on in relief of Von Holdt to start the second period) to complete the hat trick.

Eisenmenger took a direct pass Baumhoefner (three assists), who had the puck cycled to him from Kyle Luhmann (three assists), and fired it through the five-hole (between the goaltender’s pads) just over a minute into the second period.

“It was nice to come out and get a big win against Worthington after having a big loss last week,” Eisenmenger said following the game, referring to a 13-2 loss the Eagles suffered to Simley last week in a holiday tournament. “We ran the cycle well down in the corner and a lot of my goals came on wide-open nets as we moved the puck well and Mitch (Baumhoefner) made a lot of nice passes.”

Eisenmenger was not finished, though, as he scored his fourth goal 75 seconds later with Haberman assisting.

Worthington had some opportunities following Eisenmenger’s fourth goal as the Eagles found themselves in the penalty box twice but each time the Trojans were unable to capitalize.

The Eagles clamped down on the penalty kill and didn’t allow the Trojans many shots and the shots they did manage were turned away by Windom’s Stubbe.

On the second Windom penalty of the second period, the Eagles were able to turn it into a short-handed goal as Luhmann made a nice lead pass to Baumhoefner, who fired it past Scholtes (27 saves) on the glove side, to give the Eagles a 8-1 lead with 7:21 left in the period.

The Trojans later had another chance on the power play but Stubbe and the Eagles defense stymied any chances Worthington had at the goal in the second period.

The Eagles, though, did capitalize on penalties as a pair of Trojans’ infractions late in the middle frame gave Windom another two-man advantage.

With 23 seconds left in the period, Eisenmenger scored his fifth goal with Baumhoefner picking up the assist.

The game’s scoring was wrapped up with six minutes left in the game as Eisenmenger took another nice lead pass from Baumhoefner and put it past Scholtes for his sixth goal of the game. Luhmann also assisted on the game’s final goal for the Eagles.

For the game, the Eagles committed five penalties and successfully killed off all of them while the Trojans committed seven penalties and were successful in killing off five of the penalties.

Windom outshot Worthington 42 to 24 for the game but the Trojans did outshoot the Eagles in the first period by a 13 to 10 margin.

With the win, Windom improves to 3-6 overall and to 2-3 in the conference. The Eagles host Redwood Valley on Thursday.

The loss drops Worthington to 1-6 overall and to 0-4 in the conference. The Trojans host Luverne Thursday.
