Breck Ends Mound-Westonka's Season

By Laker Correspondent 03/05/2012, 1:00pm CST

After advancing with a win over Orono, the Mound Westonka boys high school hockey team played Breck in the second round of sections on Tuesday, February 28 at Parade Ice Garden. The Mound Westonka side of the rink was packed with many fans and a large student section braving the rain and ice covered roads to cheer on the boys.

The White Hawks had an early opportunity when Breck was whistled for cross checking at 4.08 of the opening period. Despite good puck movement on the power play our boys could not find the back of the net.  Shortly after the penalty expired, the Mustangs opened the scoring with a feed from behind the Mound Westonka net at 6.30 of the 1st.  The next five minutes of the period, the White Hawks and Mustangs traded scoring chances and it looked like it was going to be a high energy intense game. Breck widened the lead to two off a face off with a shot from the left half board with 5.34 left in the period. Just 30 seconds later the Mustangs tallied again at 11.54 and the wind went out of the White Hawks sails. Late in the period, Breck scored three goals at 13.53, 15.53, and 16.15 of the 1st.  Mound Westonka ran into a buzz saw giving up five goals in the last  5 ½ minutes of the 1st period falling behind 6-0.

After the break, our boys gathered themselves and dug in for a comeback try against the high powered Mustangs.  Three minor penalties against Mound Westonka in the period prevented the White Hawks from gaining any momentum. Breck scored the only goal of the period on a two on one break late at 15.35 outshooting the White Hawks 16-6 in the period for a 7-0 lead headed into the 3rd.

Mound Westonka junior Jack Brandstetter broke the shut out early in the 3rd at 2.26 scoring on a rebound off a shot from the point with the assists to Alex Bakke and Blake Brandstetter. This would end up being the only goal of the game for our boys.  Breck added a goal at 9.22 on a wrap around for an 8-1 final score.  The game was not as lopsided as the score would suggest. Take away the last several minutes of the 1st period and it was a well played game with our boys skating hard all three periods. All of the fans in the student section stayed right to the end and the boys closed out the season with an emotional salute to their supporters.
