Updated boys' hockey rankings: Jan. 5

Class 2A

Stillwater remains unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in Class 2A with 10 first place votes in the state high school coach's poll.

The Ponies (11-0, 6-0) swept the Sports Authority Holiday Hockey Classic, beating No. 20-2A Prior Lake, Benilde-St. Margaret's and No. 2-2A Elk River by a combined score of 14-2. Stillwater has outscored its opponents 60-16 and has notched two shutouts. 

Stillwater plays four consecutive away games to start the new year, including a battle with No. 15-2A White Bear Lake, before returning home to face No. 8-2A Eden Prairie.

The top three remains unchanged with Elk River (10-2, 2-0) at No. 2 despite the 4-1 loss to Stillwater, and Grand Rapids (9-1-1) right behind at No. 3. The Elks face No. 14-2A Blaine and No. 6-2A Centennial in two of their next three games.

Edina (9-3, 1-1) extended its winning streak to five games after sweeping the Schwans Cup Gold Division and rose from No. 7 to No. 4 in the rankings. The Hornets avenged their Dec. 17 loss to No. 8 Eden Prairie with a 4-2 win on Dec. 30 and leapfrogged the Eagles in the rankings.

Hornets goalie Garrett Mackay is allowing 2.17 goals per game with a .913 save percentage.

Eden Prairie dropped four spots after going 0-2-2 against in a tough stretch against four top-ten ranked opponents (No. 5-2A St. Thomas Academy, No. 9-2A Hill-Murray, No. 4-2A Edina and No. 6-2A Centennial).

Blaine (7-2-1, 3-1) jumped from No. 19 to No. 14 and Prior Lake (5-5, 3-2) earned the final spot in the top-20.

Class 1A

Hermantown climbed into the No. 1 spot with a 9-1-1 record all 10 first-place votes in the state high school coach's poll.

After beginning the season 0-1-1, the Hawks (9-1-1, 1-0) have caught fire with nine straight victories, including three shutouts and a win over No. 11-2A Minnetonka. 

Junior Tyler Watkins scored two third period goals to knock off then top-ranked Delano 4-3 and send the Hawks into the top spot.

After beginning the season 7-0, Delano (8-1-1, 1-0) tied Cloquet and lost to Hermantown in the Hilltopper Holiday Classic before beating Roseville 6-5 in overtime for third place. The Tigers relinquished No. 1 in the Class 1A standings and received no first-place votes in the state high school coach's poll. 

The rest of the top five stayed the same with St. Paul Academy (8-1), Breck (7-3-1, 1-0) and St. Cloud Cathedral (9-1-2) remaining at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5, respectively. 

East Grand Forks (6-1-1, 3-0) shutout Warroad, 4-0, for its fourth consecutive victory and earned its way into the No. 6 spot. Alexandria (6-3-3, 1-2-1) climbed from No. 9 to No. 7 after beating No. 9 Greenway and No. 10 Hibbing/Chisholm during a four game winning streak of its own.

St. Paul Johnson (8-1-1, 0-1-1) leaped from No. 19 to No .14 after going 3-0 in the South St. Paul Premier Tournament. The Governors beat three Class 2A opponents by a combined score of 13-3.
